THIRTEEN

“Is he alive?” Kennedy asked, his hands on his hips.

“Yes, he wasn’t injured, but he’s been escorted down to the station to be interviewed.”

Kennedy clipped his badge to his belt so it was clearly visible. “Can we take a peek at the crime scene?”

The policeman lifted the yellow tape so the two of them could pass to the other side. “You’ll have to square it with the OIC.” The policeman answered as he pointed to the officer in charge, who was standing by a group of officers near the building entrance.

Kennedy nodded his thanks and motioned for Bailey to keep quiet and follow him. Fortunately, the OIC was friendly, and once Kennedy explained why they were there and the connection between the cases, the OIC cleared them both to go upstairs and check out the crime scene.

“You usually get such good cooperation?” Bailey asked, a little surprised. She’d always thought there was more antagonism between law enforcement agencies, but she was pleasantly surprised by the Atlanta policeman’s helpful attitude.

“Not always, but we’re on the same side. A lot of officers understand that. The wall of blue is pretty powerful.”

“Evidently,” Bailey agreed. They rode the elevator to the fifth floor and easily found the office where the shooting had occurred. Kennedy again talked to the local police and explained their presence while Bailey scanned the room. There actually wasn’t too much to see. Two bullet holes were clearly visible in the glass wall facing the street, but the glass hadn’t shattered. Instead the bullets had left circles of damaged glass about three inches wide around the holes. The holes were about five feet from the floor near a large potted palm. She turned toward the desk. Across the room, crime techs had marked where they’d found the bullets embedded in the bookcase. She guessed that the killer had probably been aiming at Dr. Fredericks working at his desk. Apparently, the perpetrator has missed both times.

“Any leads on the shooter?”

Bailey turned her attention back to Kennedy and the conversation he was having with the Atlanta detective. The man shook his head in response to Kennedy’s question.

“Nope. We’ve found the probable apartment the shooter used due to the angle, but there was no brass or other clues left behind.”

“What about the bullets?” Kennedy asked.

“They look like .39 rounds, which is a bit weird.”

“That’s standard ammunition for the AK-47, right?”

The detective nodded. “Yep, as well as a few other models like the Soviet SKS. We just don’t see that very often. Usually, for a job like this, the perp would use a Remington 700 with a .30-06 bullet.”

Bailey found that interesting and filed it away for later research. If she remembered correctly, the use of an AK-47 was another tie to Balkavia. She thought she remembered seeing somewhere that the Russian-made rifle was a Balkavian favorite. The evidence against Dr. Petrela was getting stronger, although even she had to admit that it was still all circumstantial at this point. They hadn’t found any proof yet that he was guilty of anything.
